Jersey Shore Events for the Weekend of Oct 1-3

Although it’s the beginning of October, we have a lot of events going on at the Jersey Shore. Here’s what you can do this weekend if you’re around.

The biggest event of the weekend is the 22nd Annual Chowderfest in Beach Haven on Sunday at the Taylor Avenue Ballfield. This family fun festival features live music, activities and unlimited Chowder tasting. The event is nestled in Beach Haven surrounded by beautiful views of the bay and plenty of year end discounted shopping. It has become a tradition for family and friends to gather together to say good bye to summer and welcome in the fall. It runs 11am-4pm and admission is $20 ($10 for kids).

October is, of course, the month of Oktoberfests. A good one is the 10th Annual Highlands Oktoberfest, on Saturday from 2-10 pm in the Veterans Park. The park is festive, the food is great and the fireworks are spectacular. Authentic German food is a highlight of this famous event.

At the opposite end of the shore it’s the Cape May Oktoberfest, also on Saturday at Historic Jackson Street and Rotary Park, 10am-5pm. You’ll find there a beer garden, crafters, food vendors, authentic German style music and more.

Also in Cape May, running Saturday and Sunday from 10am-5pm, it’s the Cape May Renaissance Festival. The event will include instrumental period music, puppetry, Renaissance instruments, costumed vendors, a falconer, Shakespeare Improv, Sea chanteys, Renaissance courts and more. You’ll also find am Elizabethan Court, on progression, through the 16th century summers with Queen Elizabeth I, visiting her people through the shires and hamlets, castles and vineyards of Elizabethan England. The festival is hosted by the Willow Creek Farm & Vineyard.

Another Southern shore event is the Olde Time Italian Festival in Wildwood, running Friday and Saturday at the Fox Park on Ocean Ave. It will be an ‘Old World’ family festival weekend including crafts, games, rides, great Italian food and continuous FREE live entertainment. Festivities being on Friday at 5pm, while on Saturday it starts at 11am, with live entertainment after 3pm.

Looking at sports events, the most interesting seems to be the Shana Surf Jam Pro-Am/Music Festival at the Monmouth Beach Bathing Pavilion, Saturday from 8am-5pm. It’s both a Surfing Contest and a Live Music Festival, free for spectators.

A few other sports events take place on Sunday:

  • The 38th Jersey Shore Half Marathon on Sandy Hook at 9:00am (also a 5K race at 9:05)
  • The 38th Annual Toms River Canoe & Kayak Race: Open water races for novice to experienced paddlers. 9am-12pm at Toms River Bridge Parking Lot, Irons Street (Must pre-register)
